Encrypting a File

DataHush is primarily intended for encrypting messages, but it allows you to encrypt disk files as well. This can be useful if you wish to send a file as an attachment via e-mail, but do not want the file to be used by anyone but the recipient.

To encrypt a file, choose the 'Encrypt' menu option from the 'File' menu. This will bring up a dialog asking you to select a file to be encrypted.

Select a file and press the <Ok> button. This will bring up a dialog asking you to choose a new file to create. By default, DataHush uses the name of the file you chose, with an extension of '.cpt'

When you click the <Ok> button DataHush asks you to confirm the operation:

If you cancel, DataHush aborts the encryption process, otherwise, it asks you to select a key and a password for the file:

Select the key and password for the file, and then click the <Close> button. Your file is now encrypted and can only be unlocked by using DataHush and supplying the correct key and password. Note: Check to make sure the file has been created! DataHush dispatches the file encryption separately (asynchronously) so that large file encryptions do not interfere with the operation of the program. It is therefore possible for an error to occur in the target file. Check any important files to ensure they are present and decrypt appropriately.
